18-year-old killed after his car crashed into a steel bar south of Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — An 18-year-old died in a car crash early Sunday morning, Polk County lawmakers said.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said around 1:29 a.m. a resident in the area of 540A County Road and Quails Ridge Drive pulled over a police officer after hearing an accident.
When first responders arrived at the scene of the accident, they found the remains of a mangled Nissan 350Z that had crashed into a steel pole. Parts of the car were wrapped around the pole, while other parts were found about 150 feet away.
According to the sheriff’s office, Luis Yadiel Nieves Boria, 18, of Lakeland, drove the vehicle at high speed down County Road 540A, losing control and causing the vehicle to go off the road and hit the post.
Both Nieves Boria and his passenger, Thomas Terry, 18, of Lakeland, were thrown from the vehicle. Officials said the driver was wearing a seat belt before the accident, but his passenger was not.
According to the sheriff’s office, Nieves Boria died at the scene, while Terry sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, lacerations and head injuries. He was flown to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.
The crash is still under investigation.
