“1899” canceled on Netflix – No season 2 for sci-fi mysteries

1899‘s Ship Has Sinked: Netflix has canceled the mystery drama, its creators say.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we have to tell you 1899 will not be renewed,” co-showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who were also behind Netflix Dark, posted on Odar’s Instagram account on Monday. “We would have loved to have ended this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season like we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t go the way you planned.”

They continued: “That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

The multilingual sci-fi mystery series began streaming in November 2022. Set in the title year, it took place on the steamboat Cerberus as it crossed the Atlantic. During the crossing, the Cerberus encountered another ship that had disappeared entirely months earlier. Very strange, seemingly inexplicable phenomena began to appear shortly thereafter. Without spoiling anything, Season 1 ends on a wild cliffhanger that had the potential to radically reset the show for a possible – and now not happening – Season 2.
