2022 Emmys Best Actor in Comedy Predictions

“Ted Lasso” star Jason Sudeikis now seems tied to best “SNL” alum Bill Hader, who twice won Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

Last year’s winners: Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”
Still eligible: Yes.
Hot Series: The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Emmy has recently evolved into awarding people two years in a row and then moving on to the next. Bill Hader was the last actor to win for “Barry” (2018-2019) two years in a row, but the show has paused long enough to show where Hader should win a third time, he would be the first actor to who has won this three seasons in a row in the Family Ties category since Michael J. Fox for “Family Ties” in 1988. It’s also possible that last year’s winner, Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), will hit the road this year, and Donald Glover will win his first acting Emmy five years later for “Atlanta.”
Notable ineligible series: Michael Douglas “The Kominsky Method” (completed); William H. Macy, “Shameless” (ended); Ramy Youssef “Ramy” (Season 3 was not eligible.)

The state of the race

While it still feels like the race for best actor in a comedy series is between Saturday Night Live alumni Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader, the way things are going after the Emmy nominations have trended toward yet another win in that category for the creator and star of “Ted Lasso.”

Hader has previously won that award twice for “Barry,” but is now in a position where he’s arguably the front-runner in the Outstanding Director category for his work on “710N,” one of IndieWire’s best TV episodes of the year in a comedy series” is . If the focus was on spreading the wealth, as TV Academy has done in the past, it would make sense to award Sudeikis here and give Hader an Emmy for a new category.

There’s some speculation that this year’s Emmys will be a big award for newcomer comedy Only Murders in the Building, and if one of the nominated actors were to win it would be Steve Martin (especially given recent discussions that the show will be his final acting role), but with Season 2 currently airing, there’s a growing contingent of people who believe Martin Short is the show’s best performance, meaning there’s likely to be a vote split that won’t suit any of the experienced actor will be beneficial.

While it’s not a complete shock to see Donald Glover make the cut given how he won that category in 2017, he was a narrow lead this season of “Atlanta,” which has become much more of an anthology than the it often didn’t even feature its core cast.

“The Great” star Nicholas Hoult came as a surprise, but his co-star Elle Fanning has been promoting the show so much ahead of the nominations that it makes sense that his delightfully mischievous role as Russian Emperor Peter III caught a lot of eyes Season 2.
