death, taxes and so on Marvel Cinematic Universe Box office dominance are three of the few certainties in life, but a series that has dragged on for over a decade is about to come to an end thanks to the double whammy of Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water.
Every year since 2014, one of the top two grossing films of the year globally has come from either Kevin Feige’s conquering superhero franchise or another Disney-owned giant war of stars. Since then, we might not have had a brand new blockbuster set in a galaxy far, far away The Rise of Skywalkerbut the MCU is churning them out like never before.
The last time both top earning features existed outside of Marvel and war of stars joined Michael Bay’s eight years ago Transformers: Age of Extinction at the top of the annual rankings, with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies right behind. James Gunns Guardians of the Galaxy finished third, but the MCU didn’t even manage to crack the top 3 for 2022.
In fact, you’ll have to go all the way back to 2011 to find the last time none of the top three box office hits of a calendar year was anything Marvel or war of starswhich is overwhelming to think about. Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Waterand Jurassic World Dominion are the clear winners (and the only trio to break the billion mark), leaving the MCU out in the cold for a change.
