3 beloved birds stuffed into backpacks and stolen while breaking into The Feed Barn pet store in Capistrano Beach

CAPISTRANO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — An Orange County pet store owner is devastated after three birds, the family’s beloved pets, were stolen. She is now asking for her return.

The Feed Barn, a local pet supply store in Capistrano Beach, was broken into Monday night.

Security cameras captured images of two people wearing hoodies and face masks breaking the glass to the store’s front store.

They went straight for the shopkeeper’s prized pet birds, snatching them from their individual cages and stuffing them into backpacks.

“I came rushing down still in my pajamas and all three of our birds were stolen. They were gone,” said Michelle Martin, the birds’ owner.

The birds have been a staple of the store for years. Customers often talk to the birds, take photos and post them on social media.

One of the stolen birds is Baby Love, a 22-year-old Umbrella Cockatoo.

“Especially baby loves it here. He has so much fun interacting and talking to all the customers and being a goof — because he’s a cockatoo,” she said.

Cody is a 37-year-old double yellow-headed Amazon parrot and hangs out with one of the store’s cats. Sweetie is a 35-year-old Congo-African with an impressive vocabulary.

“Sweetie is the loudest. He’s going to whistle ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’, he’s going to sing ‘The Addams Family’, he’s doing a really good imitation of a garbage truck,” said Martin.

“When the phone rings, he answers the phone in two different voices – a man’s voice and a woman’s voice. So he has quite a large vocabulary.”

She said Baby seemed to struggle because there were white feathers all over the floor when she walked into the store.

Martin says the sudden loss of her beloved pets is so upsetting and she wants them back.

“It’s the backpacks that really do it for me. Not only did they break into my store, but they shoved them into backpacks… It’s just awful.”
