the Vampire Diaries ended in 2017. But his legacy continued to grow through spinoff series like The original and legacies. While some of the original cast members have made cameos in the spinoffs, four have confirmed they have no interest in returning for future franchises.
Some popular The Vampire Diaries cast members appeared in Legacies
After the end the Vampire Diaries and its first spin-off, The originalCreator Julie Plec launched legacies. Set in Mystic Falls, the series follows the next generation of supernaturals. The CW show focused on characters introduced in the first two series, including Danielle Rose Russell’s Hope Mikaelson, Matthew Davis’ Alaric Saltzman, Jenny Boyd’s Lizzy Saltzman, and Kaylee Bryant’s Josie Saltzman.
Several original actors from the Vampire Diaries made cameos legacies. Steven R. McQueen, Zach Roerig and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe reprized their roles as Jeremy Gilbert, Matt Donovan and Josette Laughlin in the first season.
Chris Wood returned in season 2 as Kai Parker. Claire Holt and Joseph Morgan appeared briefly as Rebecca and Klaus Mikaelson in the last two seasons. And Candace King had a surprise cameo as Caroline Forbes in the series finale.
A bit of The original Actors were also featured legacies. Riley Voelkel returned to Mystic Falls as Freya Mikaelson. And Yusuf Gatewood made a cameo as Vincent Griffith.
But some of the main cast of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ are refusing to return to the franchise
Since legacies premiered, fans wondered if some of their beloved the Vampire Diaries Signs would return. But when asked if they would ever return, some of the main cast flatly declined.
Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley – who portrayed Damon and Stefan Salvatore for the whole Vampire Diaries series run – are still good friends and have started a bourbon company inspired by the show. The two keep in touch with Plec and some of her old co-stars.
But they are not interested in reprising their roles. And they found that they would only return to the franchise as directors.
“No…I’m a vampire,” Wesley said via Us Weekly.
“Well, we’d go,” Somerhalder added. “As if we were directing.”
Nina Dobrev and Kat Graham, who played best friends Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett, aren’t interested in returning either. Dobrev left the series at the end of season six. And she has expressed no desire to reprise her role.
Graham looks back on her time the Vampire Diaries lovingly. But she noted it’s not something she wants to do again. “So, so grateful, and I mean grateful, because I’ve grown on this show, this show has made me who I really am, in my 20s, to me, yeah, the door is closed,” the actor said ET.
There could be another The Vampire Diaries spin-off
legacies was canceled after season 4. But Plec still has new ideas for the supernatural world she created. And she revealed she may have another spin-off in the works.
“There will be another one,” Plec told EW when the legacies cancellation was announced. “We’re a little sad, we’re going to take a hit. But yes, there are more ideas. There is still more to do.”
It’s unclear if Plec is new the Vampire Diaries Spinoff will happen. But if it does, Somerhalder, Wesley, Dobrev and Graham probably won’t be there.
