5 children killed in New York car crash, driver 16

Five children died in a tragic car accident in New York early Sunday morning.

The heartbreaking car accident happened as the SUV was traveling on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, New York — about 25 miles northeast of New York City. No other vehicles were involved in the fatal accident.

The five children who died were between the ages of 8 and 17, according to a press release from the Westchester County Police Department.

The sole survivor was a 9-year-old boy. He was reportedly sitting in the tailgate area before fleeing the rear of the vehicle after the crash. The surviving passenger was taken to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

There were four boys and one girl, all from Connecticut. Authorities said family members would be notified.

WABC TV reported that all six children were siblings and cousins went home.

The Associated Press reported: “Matt Conway, the superintendent of schools in Derby, Connecticut, said he learned the children were part of a family that had recently moved from New York to the New Haven County community but had not enrolled in the county .”

Conway said he reached out to the father on Sunday to offer available support from the community.

Conway said, “It’s the unimaginable. Now having to make arrangements for the burial of five of your children is a very difficult thing for anyone — one child, let alone five, that you have to make arrangements for now.”

Jim Gildea, Chair of the Derby Board of Education called“This is an absolute tragedy. We initiate our grief crisis plans. You could, of course, have known people in the neighborhood. They were residents of our community so the Superintendent has been in touch with the administration team to put these plans in place.”

Westchester County authorities are still investigating the crash to determine what caused the heartbreaking collision. Police could not say where the car came from or where it was going.
