A franchise-killing comic book sequel sparks a dormant streaming war

In one of those odd coincidences that Hollywood likes to hand off from time to time, 2010 marked the year of the “older generation ensemble action movie starring Bruce Willis.” the Expendables and Red Released just a few weeks apart.

Outside of sharing the Die Hard Iconic, both line-ups alike were stacked to the rafters with big names and bigger biceps, and they each got a sequel after finding success at the box office. However, while Barney Ross and the Sylvester Stallone gang will be returning for their fourth gig next year, there are no plans for red 3 were canceled when the second tranche underperformed.

$148 million at the box office from an $84 million budget wasn’t a disaster, but it wasn’t enough to see Lionsgate going forward with the script it originally commissioned returning writers Jon and Erich Hoeber to write . Not even the combined might of Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Mary Louise-Parker, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones, David Thewlis, Neal McDonough and Anthony Hopkins could prevent this red 2 making less money and getting worse reviews than its predecessor.

Old-fashioned actioners never go out of style in streaming, however, as the aging ass-kickers have returned from the retirement home to find a new life in streaming. According to FlixPatrol, red 2 has returned to the world’s most-watched Starz chart with a bang, even if it didn’t end up doing as well as cinema’s other older action heroes.

There’s been talk of a TV series for a while, but since we haven’t heard a peep in years, it’s safe to say the band won’t be getting back together until the inevitable reboot arrives.
