A new Elder Scrolls game just appeared out of nowhere

No, it’s not The Elder Scrolls VI, but a new game set in Bethesda Games Studios’ fantasy universe has just been released without any warning: The Elder Scrolls: Castles.

The Elder Scrolls: Castles is currently available as a free download on the Google Play Store and is classified as Early Access. Players are described as taking control of a medieval dynasty, overseeing a castle of subjects and family members as years pass. The game doesn’t appear to be available for iOS or PC yet and, as far as we know, has never been officially announced.

A look at the screenshots is reminiscent of 2015’s Fallout Shelter, a mobile game about managing one of the iconic vaults from Bethesda’s popular post-apocalyptic RPG series. It looks like players will build their castle much like they did in Fallout Shelter. Another screenshot invites players to complete “epic quests” and shows a group of characters fighting a giant red dragon, while another shows a ruler on his throne making decisions about what, in this case, is a trivial matter seems to be related to someone’s lack of musical talent.

The Elder Scrolls: Castles isn’t the first mobile game set in Nirn. A card game spin-off, The Elder Scrolls: Legends, released in 2017 for mobile and PC. The game is still playable, but no longer receives any new updates. Another Elder Scrolls mobile game, the first-person dungeon The Elder Scrolls: Blades, was released in 2019. According to the game’s website, the latest content patch arrived in January 2022 when new event quests were added.

When players can expect to get their hands on the next main installment in the fantasy RPG franchise won’t be anytime soon. Despite being announced in 2018, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said during a recent Federal Trade Commission hearing related to Microsoft’s attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard that The Elder Scrolls VI is still “more than five years away.” The good news, however, is that early development on The Elder Scrolls VI has officially begun, although more information on the title is still years away. Meanwhile, Bethesda’s new IP, Starfield, was recently released and attracted more than 10 million players.
