A NSFW challenge rocks the tent

Sex jokes and offensive stabbings – who knows The Great British Baking Show would come to this?
The popular baking competition is back for its 11th season on Netflix, with new host Alison Hammond joining Noel Fielding in the cozy baking tent. Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood return as judges, shaking hands and hugging. Yes – rocky Hollywood gives a candidate one hug in the first episode of the season. Things have changed in the GBBS World.
First up for this episode of Baking show is Cake Week, where bakers were asked to create vertical cakes in the signature round and a well-known chocolate raspberry bread for the technique. Where have we seen these raspberry swirls before? Oh, it’s the same dish from the GBBS Opening credits!
But when it was time for the showstopper challenge, all hell broke loose in the tent. The new participants were asked to create a cake in the shape of an animal. For example: A baker sculpted an elegant robin. Another piped icing onto his setup to make it look like bright blue waves carving an orca emerging from the sea. Cows, lobsters and turtles were also involved.
One of the bakers had a unique approach to the challenge: Why not bake a beaver? Nicky, a Scottish baker, surprised the judges with her Always Beavering Around cake. This wasn’t because of the flavors, but because the word “beaver” is slang for… well, we’ll let you do that the search in the Urban Dictionary. It’s definitely dirty.
As the baker approached the judges with her cake, Prue gave us this golden one-liner: “So Nicky, tell us about your beaver.”
A whole tent full of bakers bursts into laughter.
who would have thought GBBS would have had such a scandalous start to a new season? But from then on, the episode was still rated R because it turned violent. Audiences were stunned when Hollywood stabbed poor animals in such a family-friendly show!
Joking aside, The Great British Baking Show seems to have ironed out some of its biggest flaws for an entertaining, unproblematic new season so far. The controversial country weeks were canceled. Hammond replaces Matt Lucas, one of GBBS Fans’ Least Favorite Hosts. And the series features a deaf contestant with an interpreter, a big step toward greater inclusion in the series.
That does not mean TheGreat British baking show will not make us laugh from time to time at Freudian slips. But that doesn’t mean that the bakers aren’t being so murderous: In a teaser for the next episode, it looks like people are stealing each other’s dough. Oh oh. We’re in for a wild (and hopefully delicious) ride.
