According to police, 39-year-old queer activist Josh Kruger was shot and killed in his home around 1:28 a.m. Monday. He suffered seven gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach.
Lt. Hamilton Marshmond told reporters in a media briefing that police have identified a suspect: 19-year-old Robert Edmond Davis. They have issued an arrest warrant for the man.
“At this point we believe that Mr. Kruger was trying to help Mr. Davis and that they were acquaintances,” Marshmond said. “He was just trying to help him just get through life.”
He said they didn’t know what motivation Davis might have had for allegedly killing Kruger.
Kruger was known as a community activist for LGBTQ and homeless issues.
Police said information from Kruger’s friends and family helped identify Davis as their suspect.
WPVI-TV reported Sources they spoke with reported that drugs were found in Kruger’s home and that he had extensive text message conversations with Davis.
“We also call on Mr. Davis to surrender to the police. Our goal is to take Mr. Davis into custody in a safe manner for the public, our officers and himself,” Marshmond added.
The District Attorney’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee released a opinion praised Kruger for his advocacy.
“His struggles reflected so many of ours – from community rejection to homelessness, addiction, living with HIV and poverty – and his recovery, survival and successes showed what is possible when politicians and elected leaders reject bigotry and “All people are committed to the recovery in a positive way,” the statement says.
Marshmond said Davis should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone who knows his whereabouts should contact police.
