Combining the fantasy genre with genuinely heartbreaking emotion is always a difficult balancing act, but an utterly unforgettable one when managed properly, like anyone traumatized by the live-action adaptation Bridge to Terabithia can attest. Active in a similar thematic boat, Behind the blue door packs a serious punch.

Mariusz Palej is directing the screen translation of author Marcin Szczygielski’s novel, and those unfamiliar with the source material might think they figured out certain plot points well in advance. However, the undercurrent that runs throughout the narrative is chock-full of shocks, surprises and more than a few hard-hitting moments, which in turn has resulted in it becoming one of the most requested titles in streaming this week.
