Aaron Judge sets an American League record with a 62nd home run

New York Yankees hitter Aaron Judge strapped his 62nd home run of the season Tuesday night, setting a new all-time record for the American League.

Judge’s milestone thing came in an away game against the Texas Rangers, in the first inning against right-hander Jesus Tinoco. The outfielder’s homer broke the 61 mark set by Yankee great Roger Maris in October 1961.

The game will be broadcast by YES Network (for us in the New York metro area), Bally Sports (in the Southwest), and MLB Network; Michael Kay was hired to record the record breaker. Check out the historic moment below:

The judge had leveled Maris’ record on Sept. 28 after going through seven games and 34 plate appearances without a round tripper. That game-changing two-run homer came in front of Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Tim Mayza in the seventh inning and led the Yankees to an 8-3 win.

Barry Bonds, of course, holds the Major League Baseball record for most home runs in a single season, having hit 73 for the San Francisco Giants in 2001. He is succeeded by Mark McGwire (who turned 70 in 1998 and 65 a year later, both times as Cardinal of St. Louis). Sammy Sosa, on the other hand, tied 66 (1998), 64 (2001), and 63 (1999), all for the Chicago Cubs.

The late Roger Maris’ son, Roger Maris Jr., opined last week that if Judge surpassed his father’s record, “he should be revered for being the actual home run champion of a season,” given the “Steroid Era” asterisk . that towers over the amazing punches of Bonds, McGwire and Sosa. “I mean, that’s really who he is when he turns 62 and I think that has to happen.”
