Despite receiving 28,300 applications, the Homes for Ukraine program has only issued 2,700 visas to people fleeing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, government sources said.
This means that so far only around 10% of Ukrainians who have been officially offered accommodation by a British host have accepted it.
After more than 150,000 people expressed interest in hosting refugees, the Homes for Ukraine program began accepting applications on Friday, March 18.
So far, however, the Department for Leveling Up Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has not released data on the number of people who have applied to sponsor specific individuals or whose visas have been approved.
has previously reported on the “frustrating” wait times faced by applicants, with some sponsors expressing concern that the government could end up with “blood on their hands” if they don’t follow through on the process for those still stuck in Ukraine accelerated.
