Activision explains Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3’s huge file sizes
Activision explains the massive file sizes Call of Duty fans can expect to see on their hard drives this month with the release of Modern Warfare 3.
With live access to the Modern Warfare 3 campaign, players have now found a total Call of Duty install size of a staggering 234.9GB on PlayStation 5. This installation appears to include Modern Warfare 2, now Call of Duty HQ, as well as Modern Warfare 3’s campaign. Other unreleased parts of Modern Warfare 3, such as multiplayer and zombies, are not included.
Activision issued a statement explaining what was going on, but admitted that the file sizes were “larger than last year.”
“This is due to the greater amount of content available from day one, including open-world zombies and item transfer support.” Modern Warfare 2, as well as map files for the current Call of Duty: Warzone. (Note: As part of our ongoing optimization efforts, your final install size will actually be smaller than the combined previous Call of Duty experiences.)”
Activision noted that players can reduce the installation effort by going to the “Manage Files” section of the COD HQ start menu. From there, you can uninstall specific content that you don’t want to play. Activision said it will release more information about the launch in the coming days.
Call of Duty players are used to the shooter series’ huge file sizes, but it seems Modern Warfare 3’s unique launch has increased the burden.
Developed by Sledgehammer Games in collaboration with Infinity Ward, the Modern Warfare 3 campaign is the direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare 2. It includes 15 missions, each of which rewards players with items upon completion. These rewards can be used in Multiplayer, Zombies and Warzone.
Here are the Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Rewards:

- 30 minutes of double player XP tokens and 30 minutes of double weapon XP tokens
- “Corso” operator
- Ghillie Guy business card
- 30 minute XP tokens and 30 minute weapon XP tokens
- “Pathfinder” operator
- Toxic Drip business card
- 1 hour of double player XP tokens and 1 hour of double weapon XP tokens
- “Doc” operator
- Skull Rhapsody business card
- 1 hour of double player XP tokens and 1 hour of double weapon XP tokens
- “Jabber” operator
- Campaign completion emblem
- Blueprint for the campaign’s final weapon
Modern Warfare 3 releases on November 10th. It is the first Call of Duty game to be released after that Microsoft is acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billionbut don’t expect it to appear on Game Pass until 2024.
