Adult Swim Fires Justin Roiland: ‘Rick and Morty’ Will Be Remade

The flagship series co-creator and star was charged earlier this month in Orange County, California, in connection with an alleged 2020 domestic violence incident.

Justin Roiland has been ousted from Rick and Morty after allegations of domestic violence.

Adult Swim is ending its partnership with the flagship series co-creator and star, who — yes, both Rick and Morty is speaking — and earlier this month in Orange County, Calif., was charged with “a felony count of assault and a felony count of false.” Detention by threat, force, fraud and/or deception,” per Variety.

On Tuesday, Cartoon Network’s adult programming block released a statement on Twitter announcing the downfall of the co-creators and assuring fans the series (which received an outrageous 70-episode order in 2018) would continue.

“Adult Swim has ended his relationship with Justin Roiland,” the tweet reads. “‘Rick and Morty’ will continue. The talented and dedicated crew is hard at work on Season 7.”

The charges against Roiland date from 2020 and an alleged incident that “occurred on or about January 19, 2020 against an unnamed Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time.” Roiland was reportedly released on $50,000 bond on Aug. 13, 2020, and also indicted on Oct. 14, 2020, per Variety. He pleaded not guilty in 2020 and appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing on January 12, 2023. No trial date has been set.

Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, described the public image of the case as “inaccurate” in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He continued, “To be clear, Not only is Justin innocent, but we expect this matter to be dismissed once prosecutors have completed their methodical review of the evidence.”

Roiland has long been the creative powerhouse for Rick and Morty, with much of the Adult Swim brand built around the comedy style of himself and co-creator Dan Harmon, who admitted to sexual harassment in 2018. He also voiced the two. Alongside the main characters, who are expected to be recast, Roiland’s improvisations and vocalizations make up much of the sci-fi world in Rick and Morty. There have been no such announcements from Hulu regarding Roiland’s sister project, Solar Opposites, which is similar in style to Rick and Morty and co-created with Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan.
