Al Roker not at Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade – Why he’s missing from NBC

NBC lineage holder Al Roker was forced to miss the network’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in 27 years after a recent health issue ruled him out of the annual event.

“For the past 27 saves, we’ve reached out to Al Roker, ours, at that moment today Show mate and our best buddy,” said co-host Hoda Kotb at the start of Thursday’s show. “But as many of you have heard, Al is recovering and recovering very well from a recent medical problem. We just want to say we love you, Al. I wonder if you’re watching, but we wish you a full recovery.”

“We love you Al. See you next year,” added co-host Savannah Guthrie. (Meteorologist Dylan Dreyer filled in for Roker.)

Roker revealed earlier this month after noticeable absences from the today Show that he was taken to the hospital with blood clots in his leg and lungs, but assured fans he was on the mend.

“So many of you have thoughtfully asked where I have been. Last week I was hospitalized with a blood clot in my leg that sent some clots to my lungs,” Roker shared in an Instagram post. “After some medical strokes, I am so fortunate to be receiving excellent medical care and on the road to recovery. Thank you for all the good wishes and prayers and hope to see you soon.”

Roker has previously been transparent about other medical issues, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in November 2020. He later underwent surgery to have his prostate removed.

The weatherman was there today since 1990, occasionally filling in for Willard Scott and Bryant Gumbel. In 1996, following Scott’s retirement, he was promoted to a regular weekday weather pitch. He’s also given viewers many memorable Macy’s Parade moments over the years, such as when he was chased by a dancing stick of butter at the 2019 event.
