Alec Baldwin reconciles with Halyna Hutchins’ family after filming ‘Rust’ movie set

The family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed on the set of the 2021 Rust movie, and Alec Baldwin have reached a secret settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against the actor and, according to a statement released by the actor’s attorney other has been submitted.

The lawsuit, filed in Santa Fe in February against Baldwin, the film’s production companies, its producers and other key members of the crew, alleges numerous violations of industry standards.

Matthew Hutchins, widower of Halyna Hutchins, who was killed on set, will executive produce the film and receive a portion of the profits, the statement said.

“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, in our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case is dismissed. Filming on Rust, which I will now undertake, will resume in January 2023 with all of the original leads on board. I have no interest in blaming or blaming (the producers or Mr. Baldwin). We all believe Halyna’s death was a horrific accident. I am grateful that the producers and entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” Hutchins said in a statement.

“Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained an expressed desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who helped resolve this tragic and painful situation,” Alec Baldwin’s attorney Luke Nikas of Quinn Emanuel said in a statement.

Film director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the making of the shoot, is expected to return to the film. “Those of us fortunate enough to have spent time with Halyna knew her to be exceedingly talented, kind, creative and a source of incredibly positive energy through her amazing work. In my own attempts at healing, any decision to continue the film only made sense if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. While it is certainly bittersweet, I am content that together we will now complete what Halyna and I started. All of my effort on this film will be dedicated to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to bring this to a conclusion on her behalf,” Souza said in the statement.

Rust Movie Productions, LLC, Attorney Spadone for Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, said, “We are pleased that the parties have come together to resolve this matter, which, subject to court approval, represents an important step forward in Halyna’s life to celebrate and honor their work. “

The lawsuit also alleged that the production companies and producers had “cut corners” and “decided to hire the cheapest crew available,” specifically that they “knowingly hired a totally unqualified female gunsmith” and required her to time in a second role as props assistant master.
