Critics and audiences rarely fully agree on action-packed blockbusters, particularly Michael Bay’s, but that doesn’t mean the enduring disagreements over the merits of Bad Boys II hasn’t gotten any less intriguing now that we’ve reached the 20th anniversary of the sequel’s release.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the lowest-rated feature of all time that isn’t part of Bay, at 23 percent transformers franchise, but a 78 percent viewership average of over 250,000 underscores the enduring popularity of the bombastic second chapter as a hard-hitting exercise in throwing as many set pieces, gunfights and explosions into the mix as you can and see what happens.
Easily one of the most outrageously over-the-top shoot ’em ups ever made, nothing sums up the best and worst of Bay’s signature aesthetic better than Bad Boys II. It’s far too long, the humor is often crass and unfunny, the “witty” banter scattered, to put it lightly, but we’ll be damned if the impeccably staged pyrotechnic mayhem doesn’t deliver to the max.
Some people might call it Bay’s worst movie that isn’t about alien robots beating lumps out of each other, but the support drummed up on Reddit makes it clear there are just as many supporters out there who support it unironic as one of the greatest action extravaganzas of all time.
Ultimately, your mileage will depend on your preference and tolerance for Bays signature shtick, but when you’ve got two and a half hours and need to hard-wire your brain to “off,” then there’s no denying there’s a mountain of fun to be had.
