Slasher films are not generally popular during awards season, but as the star-studded musical of a popular stage production, Tim Burton dove back into the macabre with a star cast in tow. Sweeney Todd: Fleet Street’s demonic barber turned out to be an exception.
The murderous mix of show tunes and stabbings eventually won an Oscar for Best Art Direction, while also being shortlisted for Best Costume Design, with Johnny Depp in the running for Best Actor. However, it fared much better at the Golden Globes Sweeney Todd Best Film and Best Actor in the Musical or Comedy section.

An evil judge who imprisons a rogue barber for 15 years just to lure his wife, who then returns home mad with revenge and boasts a penchant for killing his customers and having their remains baked into pies by his employee it’s not exactly something that screams “Oscar bait,” but that’s the beauty of it Sweeney Todd in short.
More than 15 years after its initial release, the riotous fable has made its way back to streaming prominence with the naming of FlixPatrol Fleet Street’s demonic barber as he climbed the ranks of Chili’s global viewership charts all weekend.
The holy trinity of Burton, Depp and Helena Bonham Carter may be wrong in the eyes of many with a penchant for the spooky, something the industry’s biggest awards show has agreed to.
