Anaheim family who lost their home, birds in house fire get new birds

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — The house where the Rubio family left countless memories is now highlighted in red after a fire ripped through the home early Sunday morning.

A security camera captured flames and smoke escaping from the home as the family of nine slept inside.

Maria Rubio said her 8-year-old son woke up around 3am and noticed the fire.

“When he saw the fire, my whole living room was on fire,” Rubio said.

She said her family was able to get out just in time, but unfortunately the flames spread so quickly she was unable to save her pet birds.

Rubio said: “We couldn’t do that. When I turned around, my living room was on fire.”

She said all 12 of her precious birds had been killed.

On Thursday, Find Feathered Friends Foundation returned some joy to the family by donating eight new birds, including cockatiels, budgies and lovebirds.

Marie Calleja, founder of the foundation, said: “I think the children and the family will really enjoy it. They are rebuilding their lives and they will have some birds to live on.”

The organization also donated cages, toys and plenty of bird seed.

Rubio said the new birds will make them feel like things are getting back to normal while they wait to find out where they will live.

“Right now we’re trying to work with the City of Anaheim with Anaheim shelters to get us a place, to help us get a place so my kids don’t miss school,” Rubio said.

The family said that although they lost some irreplaceable items, they are happy and grateful everyone made it out alive.

If you want to help the Rubio family, they set one up GoFundMe page.
