animal kingdom: [Spoiler] Dies in Series Finale – Season 6 Episode 13

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s series finale animal kingdom. If you haven’t already watched, you should do so before reading on.

As much as animal kingdom Fans might have hoped the poor, tormented Pope would live happily ever after, come on. In our hearts, we knew, didn’t we, that there was no way he would survive the gut punch of the TNT drama finale (summarized here). Showrunner Daniele Nathanson, who also wrote “FUBAR” on Sunday, certainly knew. “He’s a killer,” she reminds TVLine, “so there has to be an end [that’s fitting].

“You can’t get away with that. You shouldn’t. And even he knows it,” she adds, “because he’s the soul of the show, which is a pretty perverted concept considering who he was to begin with.”

If we squint hard enough, those of us who have at times sympathized with Smurf’s twisted eldest son can almost see a kind of happy ending in his untimely death. “It wasn’t necessarily what we thought, but it was is a peaceful place…that freedom from Smurf, the freedom from what he did to Julia,” notes Nathanson. “I can’t say he’s out of the kind of mental torture we’ve all seen in a couple of seasons [wouldn’t be] a relief.

“With that in mind,” she continues, “he didn’t commit suicide and I want to be very clear about that because that’s very important. He did not do it. People might ask, “What did he die of?” He was shot at and he was digging [a tracker] from his side. I find [he succumbed to a] heart attack/heartache. That was the poetic feeling. And he had been losing blood all day!”
