Arrest in teenager's overdose death at Sylmar Juvenile Detention Center

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An arrest has been made in connection with the death of an 18-year-old who is serving a sentence in a juvenile detention center in Sylmar.

On May 9, Bryan Diaz was found dead at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall after overdosing on fentanyl.

After months of investigation, police arrested a juvenile detention center inmate, 22-year-old Nicholas Ibarra, last week.

Ibarra is accused of trafficking the drugs that killed Diaz.

The death came just weeks after a report of at least three other overdoses at that facility.

It is currently being investigated who exactly distributed the drugs to the inmates.

Eyewitness News reached out to the juvenile detention center, but they declined to comment.
