Baby Ruby Trailer: Kit Harington, Noémie Merlant in the horror film

Playwright Bess Wohl makes her feature film debut with the indie film, which debuted on TIFF in 2022.
Kit Harington and Noémie Merlant are haunted by a monster of their own creation: their newborn child.
The ‘Game of Thrones’ graduate and ‘TÁR’ star portrays a young couple whose influencer status is shaken up after becoming parents in the horror film Baby Ruby, dubbed ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ for Instagram mommies will.
Written and directed by playwright Bess Wohl, Baby Ruby follows Jo (Merlant), a successful lifestyle entrepreneur who is happily pregnant and awaiting the birth of her first child. But shortly after welcoming baby Ruby home, Jo begins to feel a little uneasy, despite being assured everything is perfectly normal. Is something wrong with her? Is something wrong with Ruby? And why are the seemingly perfect neighborhood moms so desperate to befriend her? As Jo struggles to protect herself and her baby, she is thrown into a waking fever dream where everyone is a threat and nothing is as it seems. Finally, she must face the truth of her own darkness and contend with the ultimate human sacrifice: the sacrifice that mothers make for their children.
As Jo struggles with her postpartum recovery, her mother-in-law (Jayne Atkinson) appears to have a secret intent to sabotage her parenthood. Meanwhile, Spencer (Harington) works as an “ethical butcher” to bring the bacon home…literally, and with haunting consequences.
Other leading roles are played by Meredith Hagner, Reed Birney, Lauren Beveridge, Amber Janea and Camila Canó-Flaviá. Magnet Releasing, a division of Magnolia Pictures, is releasing the film.
“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” actress Merlant told The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s 2022 TIFF premiere that the script offers “many possibilities” with the plot.
“I had to let it go and try not to think too much. I threw myself in,” Merlant said. “What I love is that there are a lot of risks in this film, a lot of scenes that I’ve never seen unpacked [Wohl] talks about motherhood.”
Harington added that his own experience as a new father allowed him to understand how Wohl capitalized on the “disorientation of raising a young child” in the script.
“For those reasons, I was very drawn to it,” Harington said. “I like a film that’s not a genre, but a mix of things that you can’t really categorize. I had a feeling this is one of them.”
IndieWire’s review praised “Baby Ruby” as a sort of cinematic PSA for “the lack of support for young mothers” around the world. “The facade of maternal bliss is maintained through social media. And there’s a silence fostered by a culture that too often discounts the work of raising children as not a career that makes open conversations about the physical and mental woes of mothers rare. Wohl weaves a mystery with so many illusions based on truth that every terror is haunting and indelible.”
Baby Ruby hits theaters and VOD on February 3rd.
