Baldur’s Gate 3 player finds a secret, meta-Karlach interaction and it’s just a little disturbing
As players continue to unearth all of Baldur’s Gate 3’s secrets, someone has found a hidden Karlach interaction where she looks directly at the player and speaks to them. It’s pretty cool – and just a little disturbing.
As YouTuber Chubblot (h/t GameRant) discovered, the interaction involves the fan-favorite Karlach, who has become so popular that Larian Studios added a “better conclusion” ending to their romance in Patch 2 . In the recently discovered clip, everyone’s favorite Tiefling Barbarian asks the player a series of questions before she falls into what appears to be an existential crisis when she realizes she’s trapped in a video game, only to watch the same hundred or so hours over and over again repeat.

At first things are pretty quiet: Karlach asks the player character if she could try out a magic trick she learned in Avernus, which involves finding out whether the person she’s talking to is telling the truth or not. And instead of turning to face the player character, she looks at the screen and stares directly at it. First she asks you what your name is, then her name.
After that, things take a bit of a turn as she seemingly becomes more confident and asks the player, “What’s happening here?” She then goes even deeper, asking questions about the grand plan, fate, and the limits of her reality. She even asks if they have played the game before. Finally, her spiral ends with her asking the player if they are having fun. Chubblot says yes and she is visibly relieved. Then things just go back to normal and thankfully end on a pleasant note.
If you’re in the middle of playing through Baldur’s Gate 3 and wondering why you haven’t encountered this existential interaction yet, it’s pretty difficult to trigger. Chubblot apparently used a back-end tool to dig it up and initially assumed it was cut content. But Karlach’s voice actress herself, Samantha Beart, confirmed on X/Twitter that this is actually not the case.
“Maybe if someone triggers this organically I’ll talk about it,” Beart wrote, clarifying that it was the interaction Is can be triggered organically, although very difficult. Added chubblot that he is on his fourth playthrough and has never seen it trigger organically.
