Beloved latest addition to horror canon ‘The Empty Man’ slammed for ‘Looking Like a CW Show’

Horror is very visual, so what exactly happens when you deliver something utterly bland and uninspired in an incredibly visual medium?

Well, depending on where you land in the discussion, The Empty Man is one of those depressingly palletized films that only its most die-hard admirers find much visual delight in. Somewhere between a cult classic and a boring slog, everyone has an opinion on the film — but maybe not as inflammatory as saying it looks like a CW show.

The most damning thing you can say about a movie is comparing it to cheap network TV. It’s like calling the latest work by an accomplished painter an elementary school drawing.

The Empty Man is a very difficult film to gauge a definitive reaction to, with a cult classic slow burn horror film at its best – and a borefest at its worst. The opening sequence is much acclaimed for its impeccable mysterious build, but from here on out you’re very fortunate to see a lot of eye-catching use of color. Flat, monotonous shots don’t complement his palette either.

What makes a slow burn movie even more difficult is if it’s even long. In general, you would expect a horror movie to be around 90 minutes long, maybe 100 minutes at most. The Empty Man takes this general rule and tosses it in the bin with its length of 137 minutes. The running time makes it longer than Thor: Love and Thunder at 20 minutes.

The Empty Man is definitely ambitious, but director David Prior probably learned a thing or two from the reactions to his first feature-length film. Ironically, his first appearance as a much celebrated short film is called AM1200 a dozen years earlier.

For slow burn horror fans you can check out The Empty Man on Disney Plus or Starz, depending on your location.
