One of the brothers died when he was nearly 25 years younger than Stiller is today.

In a casting that has raised several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in Three Identical Strangers, a limited-edition adaptation of the acclaimed documentary, according to Variety.

The 2018 film, directed by Tim Wardle and winner of the US Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman and Eddy Galland – three identical triplets who happen to meet encounter as adults. and the unveiling of the secret scientific experiment that separated them from birth. Upon its release, Three Identical Strangers received positive reviews and was shortlisted for the Oscar category for Best Documentary.

Stiller will play all three brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995 at the age of 34. Stiller is currently 57 years old, almost 25 years older than Galland at the time of death. Additionally, the core of the documentary focuses on the lives of the three brothers as young men, after becoming minor media stars after reuniting in their 20s. It’s unclear if Stiller will play the three men during their time in college, where the documentary’s story begins, and if it’s about digital de-aging.

The limited series adaptation is by Amy Lippman, best known as the creator of Party of Five and her work on Masters of Sex, In Treatment and LA Law. She will host and executive the series with Stiller through Red Hour Films. Additional executive producers are Wardle, Sidney Kimmel, John Penotti, Charlie Corwin, Marcy Ross, Piers Vellacott, Dimitri Doganis and Emmeline Yang Hankins. Sony Pictures Television is producing with SK Global and TriStar Television.

Although Stiller has not appeared extensively on television outside of his short-lived but Emmy-winning sketch series The Ben Stiller Show in 1993, the actor has served as a television producer and director. Most recently, he executive produced and directed both episodes of Apple TV+’s Severance and Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, earning Emmy nominations for his work. Stiller’s recent acting credits include cameos in Hubie Halloween and Bros, the 2021 rom-com Locked Down, the 2017 film The Meyerowitz Stories, and 2016’s Zoolander 2.
