Birmingham Diamond League 2022: when is the athletics meeting, who is performing, can I watch it on TV in the UK and what is the prize money?

It will be one of the first events to be held at Alexander Stadium since it underwent a complete refurbishment for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Numerous world champions and Olympic champions compete against the best athletes in Great Britain at the meeting.

What is the Diamond League?

The Diamond League is an annual series of elite athletics competitions that includes a series of the finest invitational athletics meetings – in 2022 there will be 13 meetings.

The series is the highest level of the one-day World Athletics Meetings competition.

What events are held in Birmingham?

Elaine Thompson-Herah, the second fastest woman of all time, will be one of the star names in Birmingham.

Not all disciplines are included in every Diamond League meeting.

In Birmingham, male athletes will compete in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, high jump and discus.

Meanwhile, women competitors will take part in the 100m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 400m hurdles, pole vault, long jump and discus.

Which athletes are competing?

A total of seven reigning individual Olympic champions will take part in the meeting.

The Blue Ribbon men’s 100m will be led by Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse, who will compete against a field that includes former Olympic and relay world champion Yohan Blake, former world indoor champion Trayvon Bromell and reigning British European champion Zharnel Hughes includes.

Olympic hurdles champion Hansle Parchment and ex-Olympic champion Omar McLeod will compete in the 110-metre hurdles together with Great Britain’s former world indoor champion Andrew Pozzi (GBR).

The men’s high jump Olympic champions and all three medal winners from Tokyo – Daniel Stahl, Simon Pettersson and Lukas Weißhaidinger – compete.

Olympic 1500m bronze medalist and Scottish record holder Josh Kerr will compete against world indoor champion Samuel Tefera and current world leader Abel Kipsang in the 1500m.

The men’s 800m will feature world champion Donavan Brazier and Olympic silver and bronze medalists Ferguson Rotich and Patryk Dobek.

In the 400m, European champion Matthew Hudson-Smith will take on Michael Cherry, a member of the USA 4 x 400m relay quartet who won gold at the Olympics.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah and the second fastest woman of all time in the world is headlining the women’s 100m, competing against a field that includes World and European Champion Dina Asher-Smith.

In the pole vault, Olympic champion Katie Nageotte will be accompanied by Olympic bronze medalist and British record holder Holly Bradshaw, while in discus, Olympic champion and US record holder Valarie Allman will meet multiple world and Olympic champion Sandra Perković

Olympic, world and European champion Malaika Mihambo leads an impressive long jump field that also includes world indoor champion Ivana Vuleta.

Meanwhile, Olympic silver medalist and British record holder Laura Muir will run the 1500m alongside training partner and Olympic fourth-place finisher in the 800m, Jemma Reekie.

In the Olympic 800m event, silver medalist and British record holder Keely Hodgkinson will compete alongside his British compatriot and Olympic finalist Alex Bell.

The women’s 400-meter hurdles will feature five Olympic finalists, including 2016 Olympic and silver medalist Dalilah Muhammad from Tokyo.

And Britain’s Calli Thackery will be joined in the 5000m by her compatriots Jess Judd and Verity Ockenden.

Can I watch athletics on TV?

Every Diamond League meeting is broadcast live on BBC TV and BBC iPlayer, as well as on the BBC Sport website and mobile app.

From 1.15pm to 4.30pm you can catch the action from the Birmingham event on BBC1.

What is the Diamond League prize money?

There is prize money to be won in both the individual events and the overall series.

The winner of each event will receive $10,000, 2nd $6,000, 3rd $3,500, 4th $2,000, 5th $1,250, 6th $1,000, 7th $750 and 8th $500.
