Boyd Holbrook: Indiana Jones 5 Footage Is “Badass”

Holbrook says the upcoming sequel will keep the most popular style cues from James Mangold’s filmography while adding “that big Indiana Jones scale.”

Next spring, 15 years after the polarizing film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harrison Ford will return to cinema screens in his iconic fedora. The long-awaited (but as yet untitled) Indiana Jones 5 has been a passion of Ford’s for years, and many fans can’t wait to see what director James Mangold does with the iconic character. With recent films like Top Gun: Maverick proving that long-dormant action franchises still have the ability to deliver classic sequels, expectations for Indiana Jones’ final adventure are sky-high.

In a new interview with Men’s Health, ‘Indiana Jones 5′ star Boyd Holbrook made it clear that fans’ excitement is justified. The actor said he recently saw some footage from the film starring Mangold and was amazed by what he saw.

“I can assure you it’s going to be tough,” Holbrook said. “I saw about half an hour of this when I went to LA and I saw Jim. Just look at his work: Ford vs Ferrari, it’s going to be fast, it’s going to be badass and it’s going to have heart. All of his films have that emotional beat, but we have that Indiana Jones scale.”

His comment echoes similar remarks from his Indiana Jones 5 co-star Mads Mikkelsen, who said the film still feels like a classic Spielberg film despite James Mangold directing the film.

“It just exuded that golden age of the 1940s series – and that’s also the case in the fifth film,” said Mikkelsen. “They go back a lot to the first and second movies and get that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic.”

Mikkelsen also praised Harrison Ford’s physical fitness and insane work ethic on set, making it clear that the 80-year-old actor is more than capable of carrying the adventure franchise.

“I remember the first day of shooting, it was a night shoot, then we stopped at 5 in the morning – and then [Harrison Ford] got on his mountain bike and cycled 50 kilometers,” said Mikkelsen. “Harrison is a monster of a man, a very nice monster.”

Indiana Jones 5 is slated to hit theaters on June 30, 2023.
