Boyfriend beat up for asking wife to take bus to work so he can use her car

A friend has been dragged online after asking his girlfriend to take the bus to work so he could use her car.

Posted on Reddit’s r/AmITeA**hole forum, a man using the anonymous username u/2isny shared his story to get opinions from the “AITA” community. The viral post has over 6,000 upvotes and 4,000 comments.

The original poster (OP) began his story by declaring that he was involved in a car accident during the eight months he was with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, he only got about $2,400 from his insurance company, which wasn’t enough to buy him a new car, and he had a few more months to save up money.

He asked his girlfriend if he could borrow her car to go to and from work for the time being. She agreed, but she had some rules. The OP was responsible for driving her back and forth from work and was the designated driver for both dates and when she went out with her friends. He declared it was “too much work”.

When he took the bus to work, it took him about an hour and 45 minutes to get there. On the other hand, it would only take his girlfriend 45 minutes to get to her place of work by bus.

The OP wrote: “I’ve asked her to take the bus so I can use the car for a few months while I save and pay for insurance and gas but she refuses to say it’s her car and if.” I am not happy with our facility can I take the bus She is so selfish and unwilling to compromise, I have tried to get her to take the bus 2-3 days a week but she doesn’t want to and tells me only if I don’t like taking Ubers.

“An Uber to my work and back from my work is $110 and I only make about $200, it’s not even worth going to work for me. I’m mad and refused to give her the keys because I said she could catch the bus that day and she grabbed my wallet and used my CC to get an Uber without my permission. She yelled at me to give her the keys back but I hid them and we are standing still,” he concluded.

news week has published several articles on relationship conflicts, including a debate sparked about a woman who didn’t want her friend’s fiancé to come on vacation, a partner who was slammed for anger at his “sick” husband for not done lots of housework, and slammed a woman online for suggesting to her partner not to have contact with their young son.

How to deal with selfishness in a relationship

Are you in a similar situation as above in the OP? According to wedding.com, here are some tips for dealing with selfishness in a relationship:

  • Take the attention you’ve been giving your partner and give it to yourself by engaging in fun self-care activities.
  • What things does your partner do that annoy you the most? Find out what you are willing to grapple with and talk to your partner about what needs to change and what is a deal breaker.
  • Explain the benefits of changing behavior to your partner to give them a sense of what they can do better.
  • Try to take turns listening and talking to each other in daily activities.

Redditor reactions

“[You’re the a**hole]. She is the selfish one? You use her car and expect her to take the bus. Get a car with a monthly payment plan instead of relying on her to solve your problems,” exclaimed u/FunkyOrangePenguin, receiving the top comment from over 21,000 upvotes.

“[You’re the a**hole]. Hard stop. If you’re going to get up at 6am anyway, take the damn bus. You are lazy and entitled and you demand that she solve YOUR problem,” wrote u/saltycathbk.

U/not_a_bad_egg said: “Yeah, [you’re the a**hole]. By taking her keys you have effectively stolen her car. ‘She’s so selfish and uncompromising’ – dude, it’s literally HER car.”

U/Stolen_Showman explained: “[You’re the a**hole] without doubt. It’s her car, but you’ve decided to deny her access to her own property because you can’t afford to replace your own property that you’ve already broken. Am I having a stroke, or do you really mean it? They then complain because she used your credit card to pay for an Uber after you stole her car keys.

“I don’t know why you think she deserves to be treated with such contempt, but you are wrong. I hope she reads every reply which I’m sure will say it all clearly [you’re the a**hole], and kick you to the curb for her own good. Then you have no car, no girlfriend and no one but yourself,” the commenter continued.
