  • BP Pulse has opened its third UK “Gigahub” at the NEC exhibition centre
  • The site has 30 ultra-fast 300kW charging points and a further 150 7kW devices
  • “Britain’s largest charging hub” was opened this week by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt

Could this mean the end of range and charging anxiety for electric car owners driving around the Midlands?

The so-called Gigahub has been developed by BP Pulse at the NEC in Birmingham and claims to be the “largest charging station” in the UK.

Up to 180 electric vehicles can be charged at the same time, but at different speeds.

Could this site spell the end of prosecution fears in the Midlands? BP has opened the UK’s “largest charging center” in Birmingham – and it can charge the batteries of many electric vehicles at the same time

With the NEC exhibition center close to key hubs for the On the M42 and M6 motorways, it offers a charging solution for electric vehicle owners on long journeys.

This could mean an end to long queues at motorway service stations in the West Midlands, as was the case last Christmas when some electric car owners were forced to wait two to three hours for their car to charge while traveling to visit family and to visit friends.

The Gigahub has the capacity to charge up to 30 electric vehicles via ultra-fast 300 kW DC connections, allowing the latest models’ batteries to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around half an hour.

An additional 150 electric vehicles can be connected to 7 kW AC charging stations, which offer far slower charging speeds.

There is also a drive-thru Starbucks at the hub, so drivers can get coffee and other refreshments while they wait for their car to extend its range.

The Gigahub was officially opened by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on Thursday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, he said: “This is the largest private investment in electric vehicle charging in the UK and a huge vote of confidence in the UK’s role as a leader in the green industry.”

“The groundbreaking site will be a key transport hub for the future and represents a significant step in our nationwide rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.”

The Gigahub will serve the seven million visitors who come to the NEC campus annually, as well as those passing through.

With annual traffic volumes of up to 60 million around the hub site, it will be a well-used service for early electric car adopters.

Akira Kirton, vice president of BP Pulse UK, said: “The transition to electric vehicles is accelerating, which is why BP Pulse is focused on accelerating the development of the UK’s electric vehicle infrastructure and delivering the right charging speeds in the right locations.” to 1 billion pounds invested.

“This new, nationally significant BP Pulse Gigahub at the heart of the UK road network is another great example of our strategy being delivered.”

“We plan to deploy hundreds of hubs this decade in places where EV drivers need them – in urban areas, on highways and highways, and in destinations such as restaurants, shopping centers and hotels.”

The NEC site is the third BP gigahub in the country, now operating alongside the Park Lane site in central London and another at Gatwick Airport.
