Brad Pitt and Nick Cave make surprising sculpting art debut in Finland

Pitt reportedly began making ceramic art after his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2017.

HELSINKI, Finland — Hollywood’s Brad Pitt and Australian musician Nick Cave have debuted as artists an exhibition in Finland that shows Sculptures and ceramics of the movie star and the singer-songwriter.

The Sara Hilden Art Museum in the southern Finnish city of Tampere was originally intended to only display the wide variety of work by British artist Thomas Houseago – known for his sculptures – but he reportedly persuaded the museum to include works by his friends Pitt and Cave.

“Cave and Pitt are already well-known in their respective fields of music and cinema, but this is the first time ever that they are exhibiting their artworks – pieces created over the course of an ongoing dialogue with Houseago,” the Finnish museum said.

Pitt and Cave traveled to Tampere, a university town known for its vibrant culture and music scene, for a pre-opening event on Saturday. Finnish media reported that both men said they were excited and nervous to present their art publicly for the first time.

Among the nine works Pitt, 58, features a house-shaped structure molded from clear silicone and riddled with bullets, and a plasterboard depicting a shooting scene.

Pitt reportedly began making ceramic art after his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2017.

“For me, it’s all about self-reflection,” Pitt told Finnish public broadcaster YLE. “It’s about, you know what I did wrong in my relationships? Where did I miss something?”

“It was really taken out of personal responsibility for what I call a radical inventory of the self, getting really cruelly honest with myself and … considering those I may have hurt and the moments where I’m just plain wrong,” he said the American Oscar winner and film producer told YLE.

Von Cave, known for his dark baritone voice as the frontman of his band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the exhibition features a series of ceramic figurines depicting the life of the devil. He designed, painted and glazed the 17 figures between 2020 and this year.

“I wanted to make devils because I like red. And I like the red frosting color,” Cave told YLE. “I finally decided to do the life story of the devil. For me personally it speaks something about the idea of forgiveness or the need to be forgiven. It is a very personal work for me.”

The exhibition opened on Sunday and runs until January 15, 2023.
