Brad Pitt fired ‘Fight Club’ Courtney Love over Kurt Cobain movie

Love would play Marla, who would eventually be portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter in the film.

When David Fincher made the 1999 film Fight Club, there were several actresses who were considered to play Marla, the love interest of Edward Norton’s narrator and protagonist. Among them were Janeane Garofalo, Winona Ryder and Norton’s then-girlfriend Courtney Love before the role eventually went to Helena Bonham Carter. Now Love claims she was cast in the role and was ready to direct the film before co-lead Brad Pitt threw her out of the production.

The “Hole” frontwoman made the claims during an interview on Marc Maron’s podcast “WTF,” which aired Dec. 27. According to Love, Pitt got Fincher to take her out of the film after she turned down a proposal from him for a biopic about her late husband Kurt Cobain. Love married the “Nirvana” rock icon in 1992, two years before he committed suicide. According to Love’s story, Pitt suggested the film to her during a meeting between the two and Gus Van Sant to discuss a possible adaptation of the short story “Brokeback Mountain,” years before Ang Lee directed it for the big screen.

“I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt. I’ve gone nuclear I don’t make a fist. Who the hell do you think you are?” love tells.

After the meeting, Love claims she was fired from Fight Club, with Norton being the one who initially broke the news.

“He starts sobbing,” Love said. “And he said, ‘I don’t have the power!'” Afterwards, Fincher reportedly called Love to confirm that she had dropped out of the film.

Despite the alleged bad blood between Love and Pitt, the “Babylon” star reportedly hasn’t given up trying to make a Kurt Cobain movie. During the podcast, Love claimed she turned down a Cobain biopic pitch from Pitt and his production company, Plan B, as recently as 2020. Love shared that director Cameron Crowe told her, “Brad Pitt was brought to this earth to haunt you for Kurt, which has been on since 1996.”

“I don’t know if I trust you, and I don’t know that your films are for-profit,” Love said. “These are really good social justice movies, but if you don’t get me, you kind of don’t get Kurt, and I don’t feel like you do, Brad.”
