The voice is finally back! The season 22 premiere on Monday, September 19 opened up an exciting competition between trainers Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, John Legend and newcomer Camila Cabello. But how did Camila fare on her first night of blind auditions? With two four-chair turns on her team, she’s already killing it. Here is a summary of The voice Season 22 Episode 1.
[Spoiler alert: The following story contains spoilers for The Voice Season 22 Episode 1.]
Omar Cardona was cast in four chairs for Journey’s performance of Separate Ways (Worlds Apart). It was the singer’s stage presence and “sick reach” that made Camila turn around at the last moment. Omar, a full-time artist from Florida for 15 years, said he loves old-school rock. Gwen told Omar she was “dying” to work with him, and John praised the singer’s range and unique voice. Omar joined Team Legend and gave John his first teammate of the season.
South Carolina native Emma Brooke, 19, sang “California Dreamin'” by The Mamas & The Papas to portray her own audition dream The voice. John turned within seconds, looking impressed with her breath control and reach. Gwen turned as well. She told Emma that she wanted to help her “shape” her dream. John added that he was “attracted” to her powerful singing, but he wanted to help Emma break away from her classical music training and let go. Emma went to Team Legend.
Backing vocalist David Andrew, a native of Tennessee, has sung for big names like Ed Sheeran, and he was even once a stand-in for John. However, he dreams of “being the center of attention”. He played a slow and sultry rendition of Harry Styles’ “Falling,” showing off his high notes. Gwen and John turned to David. Gwen said she loved David’s energy. In the end, David (unsurprisingly) joined Team Legend.

Ian Harrison, a bartender and musician from Ohio, chose Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met” for his audition because it reminded him of his late father, who bequeathed his guitar to Ian after his death. Blake, John and Gwen turned their chairs for Ian. Blake told Ian his voice had “character” while Gwen appreciated how Ian “showed his heart”. Ian decided to join Team Gwen and challenged her to jump up and do a happy dance.
Jay Allen of Cedar Falls, Iowa dedicated his audition to his mother, who died in 2019 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. He sang Cody Johnson’s “Til You Can’t” while displaying a country twang in his voice. He earned Blake and Gwen chair changes and made for a hilarious husband-wife fight. Blake praised Jay’s strength and tone. Meanwhile, Gwen said she learned everything she knows about country from Blake and could include him in the coaching. To Gwen’s great surprise, Jay joined her team.

Morgan Myles is no stranger to the music industry. The Nashville native is a full-time touring artist who has toured nearly all 50 states with her music. Morgan demonstrated her expertise with a beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that was blown away by all four coaches – plus Camila used her block on Gwen before. John praised their song choices, noting that it takes “Cojones” to make such a famous song.
Morgan sees herself as a country artist as well as a pop and soul singer. Camila told Morgan she wanted to help forge her own path as an artist without being stuck to one genre. Meanwhile, Blake leaned into the land of everything, noting that he was referencing her journey as a Nashville artist. In the end, she chose Team Camila.
The voice Season 22 Episode 1 continued with singer Orlando Mendez from Miami, Florida. He comes from a Cuban-American family but has a passion for country music. Orlando proved his title as “The Cuban Cowboy” and sang “Beer Never Broke My Heart” by Luke Combs. Camila and Gwen turned their chairs first, followed by Blake. Then John turned around at the last second.
Blake boasted about his country star credentials, while Camila bonded with Orlando through their shared hometown and Cuban roots. He encouraged Orlando to be stubborn in staying with the country. Camila said she was looking for a “special tone” and someone who “made her feel”. Gwen claimed that she is married to Blake and said she can help Orlando navigate the competition. John wanted Orlando to pick him as the most unexpected choice, but he ended up with Team Camila.

The voiceThe reign of the country’s king may be coming to an end. Blake lost two country artists to other coaches on the premiere, and he’s struggled to get anyone on his team. He resorted to trying out wands given to him by a candidate, but he had no such luck. But has that luck changed?
Team Blake so far: Empty

Kate Kalvach, from Oklahoma City, comes from a pastoral family and has been passionate about music since childhood. She auditioned with Kacey Musgrave’s “Rainbow” while showing off her smooth voice. Camila, Blake and Gwen all turned at the same time. Blake muted Camila’s microphone, but that didn’t stop her from shouting praises at Kate. She praised the song choices and Kate’s falsetto. Gwen said she could help Kate mix multiple genres and Blake brought out a literal goat to prove himself as GOAT fans will have to tune in on Tuesday September 20th to see if that was enough to get Kate to join his team.
