Most cats are born with some type of pattern or marking, but a cat’s unusual markings have caught the eye of the internet, where the cat has been compared The Phantom of the Opera.
Erin – who uses the TikTok handle phantomoftheopurra – first shared footage of her unusual cat in 2021, but this week she went viral after a video garnered millions of views.
The cat with unusual markings is called Ashfur and lives with owner Erin in California.
The musical premiered in October 1986 in London’s West End and later on Broadway in New York in 1988 The Phantom of the Opera Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on the 1910 novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux.
The musical tells the story of a masked figure lurking beneath the streets of Paris in the famous catacombs, terrorizing the residents of the Paris Opera House above.
Ashfur wowed viewers on TikTok, who viewed the video featuring the 1-year-old cat almost 2 million times and left thousands of comments.
“Omg that’s an amazing looking cat,” said one TikToker, while another commenter joked, “I need her to sing Meowsic of the Night.”
“Beautiful,” wrote another commenter on the viral TikTok post, “I’ve never seen a cat like that.”
“When Andrew Lloyd Webber comes together cats and Phantom of the opera into a musical,” said another viewer.
Domestic cats are known to have fur of various colors and patterns. Cat Fanciers’ Association Allbreed Judges and Editors of cat talk Magazine, told Teresa Keiger news week: “Cats have two primary colors: black [melanin] and red [phenomelanin]. When the pigment is spread more thinly on the hair shaft, it is “diluted” and we get the colors blue [commonly called gray; the dilute of black] and cream [the dilute of red]. Melanin gives us the brown/black color that we see in brown tabby cats.
“Genetics give us the different patterns, including the four tabby patterns [classic, mackerel, spotted and ticked]; Celebration [no pattern, just color]pointed [color only on the face, paws, and tails—the cat is born white and the color forms where the body is coldest. Pointed pattern cats always have blue eyes]. And those are just the most common patterns.”
Keiger says the brown tabby is one of the most common feline markings – attributing it to the fact that it was the original pattern that our domestic cat ancestors had when they first began to leave the African grasslands: “It offered a great.” Camouflage in those grassy areas,” she explained, “but as they moved and interacted with other lands, cats, and humans, their colors and patterns changed as well.”
It turns out Ashfur’s marks are due to something else as well. told Erin news week: “He looked very different when we got him. He had a fever coat and then got vitiligo.”
Vitiligo is a condition that causes the skin to lose its natural pigment. Like humans, cats and dogs can develop vitiligo, and skin depigmentation can also cause hair to turn white.
Although it may look unusual, vitiligo causes no discomfort and pets can live long and happy lives with their newfound markings. However, PetMD says it’s always worth contacting your vet if there’s a significant change in your pet’s appearance.
Ashfur isn’t the only cat to have been winning hearts online lately, as just last week a kitten crossing her paws just like her mum melted hearts, with viewers calling the image “too precious”. .
