Chase: Chaz Lamar Long, a man who led the Seal Beach Police Department in a fatal chase in Long Beach, is wanted by federal authorities

SEAL BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — A man who led Seal Beach police on a chase that ended in a fatal accident involving multiple cars Tuesday night was wanted by the US Marshal’s office, officials said.

The chase began when a Seal Beach Police Department officer pulled over a couple in a silver 2006 Lexus sedan for a traffic violation near Marina Drive and the Pacific Coast Highway around 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to Lt. Julia Clasby of the Seal Beach Police Department.

“While the officer was conducting a file review on the woman, the man moved into the driver’s seat and accelerated away from the location of the stop,” Clasby said in a press release.

The suspect, Chaz Lamar Long, a 39-year-old Antioch resident, allegedly refused to stop and continued on the PCH. At one point, police said Long briefly drove on the wrong side of the road.

After a brief chase, the fleeing driver ran a red light and crashed into eight cars on PCH and 2nd Street in Long Beach, Clasby said.

Long allegedly ran from the scene but was taken into custody after an officer used a taser on him.

Clasby told reporters Wednesday night that a toddler and the female passenger were in the vehicle with Long.

The woman was injured in the accident and taken to a hospital. Her name has not been published. An infant in the vehicle with the suspects was taken to a hospital for observation.

Clasby said police later found that Long had an outstanding federal warrant for his gun violations. He was also taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries, but was later released.

Several other people involved in the clash were injured and taken to hospitals, police said.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the woman killed in the crash as Sara Shorteno, 74, of Toronto, Canada.

She was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision with the suspect’s car, Clasby said.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, Long was charged on suspicion of murder, child endangerment, dodging and hit-and-run.

Seal Beach Police say Long’s relationship to the woman and baby in the car is unknown.
