That’s it for Jesse Lee Soffer Chicago P.D
Wednesday’s episode of the NBC drama marked the actor’s final appearance as Det. Jay Halstead in an emotionally charged hour thereby he left the secret service forever.
As a result, Halstead got into a scuffle with a suspect and stabbed the man to death. He refused to go along with Voight and Upton’s cover story and instead turned himself in to Chief Patrick O’Neal. He then gave up his badge and got another job in the army, leading a unit that tracked down the worst guys in the drug cartel. He should take over his post in Bolivia.
The army is “black and white; good and bad. It’s not more of it,” he told Upton. They had little time to say goodbye because he was due to depart that day. Halstead assured Upton that they could do it because it would only take eight months, maybe a little longer.
“You’re the love of my life,” he added, “and when I’m yours, you know you have to let me go.”
Voight also said goodbye at the airport. Then Halstead said to the sergeant, ‘I want to be you. But it’s like you’ve always told me, ‘I’m not, and I shouldn’t try.’ And with that, he got on the plane.
Soffer announced his departure from the Dick Wolf trial in August: “I want to thank the incredible fans for their unwavering support over the past 10 years and I want to express my deepest gratitude to Dick Wolf and everyone at Wolf Entertainment, Peter Jankowski, Matt Olmstead , Derek Haas, Michael Brandt, Rick Eid, Gwen Sigan, NBC, Universal Television, my colleagues and our incredible crew,” he said in a statement at the time. “Creating this hour-long drama week in and week out has been a labor of love for everyone involved with the show. I will always be proud of my time as a det. Jay Halstead.”
Halstead’s departure also puts a damper on #Upstead, the romantic pairing between himself and co-star Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). The duo officially started dating in Season 8 and secretly married in the courthouse in Season 9. For Upton, Halstead’s absence “will definitely have a big impact on her character this season being without him,” showrunner Gwen Sigan previously told TVLine.
The EP noted that they “had such an interesting relationship, and it’s been like that from the start… They have that.” thing together. It’s like they know what the other is thinking. They have always supported each other. They’ve been in so many traumatic situations, and yet they’ve had each other’s backs. Even their marriage is built on that need to get through something, to be each other’s anchor and support.”
