A big win over Moana Pasifika and no rolling maul attempt in sight.

The Chiefs went by coach Clayton McMillan’s request and not only recovered well from last weekend’s shutout against the Blues, they did it nicely.

Lineout drives have been the kryptonite for Moana and an ugly, boring part of recent victories against her, but an undermanned Chiefs side instead found fun in the wide channels in their 45-12 Super Rugby Pacific win at Hamilton on Saturday night.

Sure they tried a few times, but to the visitors’ praise they also persevered valiantly and instead the 8126 in attendance at FMG Stadium Waikato were treated to some Easter treats in six tries to a two bonus point win.

Etene Nanai-Seturo and Alex Nankivell each scored a brace, while substitute captain Luke Jacobson also crossed as the Chiefs won at home for the first time since May 22 last year – about 11 games ago.

In her sixth game in 23 days on a schedule altered by COVID-19, Moana Pasifika displayed a touch of brilliance, a dose of struggle, much-needed improvements in the discipline department but a slew of costly, unforced errors.

From a shockingly misfiring lineup to a plethora of kicks sent in full, they never gave themselves a chance to cause an upset against a Chiefs side with three injured All Blacks and another handful of rested frontliners.

The visitors were 24-5 down at the break and struck in the opening minutes of the second verse when Ereatara Enari gave Bradley Slater and Ollie Norris a shot and Solomone sent Kata clear, but the Chiefs were undeterred.

Their 51st-minute strike was the highlight of the contest as the game swept around an injured Shaun Stevenson, who was down – who then left the park in poor shape – and Nanai-Seturo charged down with the left touch instead Pass , opted for a chip kick for Nankivell to take full advantage of his double.

Salt was rubbed in the wound when officials discovered Chris Apoua’s shoulder had illegally contacted Mitch Brown and referee Ben O’Keeffe waved a yellow card that could have been very close to red.

The Chiefs made another try with their one-man advantage and Bryn Gatland completed a perfect night off the boat to score 15 points while new All Black Josh Lord put on a great display alongside returning international Tupou Vaa’i.

The big moment

Alex Nankivell’s stunning second try. Moana Pasifika had just opened the scoring in the second half to close the gap, but the Chiefs’ stunning goal showed they meant business.

7/10: It was always expected to be fairly one-way traffic, but the Chiefs made sure it wasn’t going to be a rolling Maul fest and made good use of the ball.
