College football team brightens up Miami Gardens elementary school – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI GARDEN, FL. (WSVN) – A South Florida school has had renovations and more, and they have a college football team to thank for the generous gesture.

The Oklahoma athletes have spent the last few days looking after children and renovating their elementary school.

The University of Oklahoma football team made a stopover in South Florida. Players and coaches arrived at Scott Lake Elementary School in Miami Gardens for a three-day community service project.

“We’re going to be doing some service projects here, beautifying the campus, painting it, redoing some play areas, moving some furniture,” said Josh Norman of the University of Oklahoma.

Aside from the renovations, the Oklahoma Sooners will be mentoring and spending time with the students.

“We’re here for the kids, you know, we’re here to be with them, to influence them,” said Ethan Downs, a student athlete.

They spent the day having breakfast with the children in the cafeteria, dancing with them in the classroom, and even jumping into the school’s swimming pool to teach the children water safety tips in partnership with the district’s swimming program.

The players said such events bring them joy.

“When you serve, you expect nothing in return. You want to receive a gigantic award and it touches your heart. It’s humbling and fun to serve people,” Downs said.

The principal said she hopes the project will help her students succeed and inspire similar events in Miami-Dade County public schools.

“Seeing the college players walking around with their national championship rings or the big 12 rings and motivating our students will really inspire the kids who want to tie the knot between academics and excellence, but I hope this will be a door opener for everyone Schools in Miami-Dade County Public Schools to do unusual things in unusual ways for unique experiences that will impact our students for life,” said Dr. Bridget McKinney, Principal of Scott Lake Elementary School.

This is just the first day of the team’s activities. On Tuesday, they plan to cheer up the school’s fifth-grade students as they begin taking the state’s science assessment.
