Colorful Happy Hats for Kids brighten the spirits of children in hospitals battling serious illnesses and COVID

TORRANCE (KABC) — Happy Hats for Kids is a nonprofit organization about the power of healing and the realization that a small gesture can make a big impact in the lives of others.

These are no ordinary hats and they certainly make a difference.

Sheri Waldstein founded the organization in 1991 for a very personal reason.

“Happy Hats for Kids started 31 years ago because I lost my little brother, my mom and dad and my grandmother all to cancer and I was a hat designer by trade,” Waldstein said.

Then this idea came up.

Since then, the hats have lifted spirits from children in hospitals battling cancer, serious illnesses and, more recently, COVID.

The hats are whimsical, creative, all hand-sewn and decorated by hundreds of caring volunteers throughout the year.

Among them is Torrance Mayor George Chen.

“These children in hospitals need every kind of support that people can give them, so they know they are valued and not suffering alone,” Chen said. “Think of ways to bless others — our community gets better, our world gets better, if each of us, if we start each day, how can we bless someone else?”

The hats have been finding their way into hospitals across the country for years. During the holidays it’s a special delivery from Santa. For the kids, it’s the gift of a smile and a much-needed moment of joy.
