Congresswoman Maxine Waters stops to help hundreds waiting in line for Section 8 housing vouchers

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Hundreds of frustrated people lined up outside a nonprofit in Los Angeles Friday morning, many of whom expected to receive Section 8 housing vouchers.

“The problem here is that people assume they’ll get a Section 8 voucher and it’s overcrowded,” said Tiffany Mathis, who is currently experiencing homelessness. “They don’t understand that you have to be in a program and it’s a referral service or you’re given certain services, housing or housing until they assess what you need and I think that messed the whole thing up today .”

Congresswoman Maxine Waters noticed the large crowd near Imperial Highway and Vermont Avenue and decided to stop and help.

“Because of the confusion and people not knowing the difference between emergency homeless emergency vouchers and regular Section 8 vouchers, they are here today just trying to get help,” she said.

At one point, she even used a microphone from a nearby police unit to provide more information.

“I blame those who have the money that we sent from the federal government for not being able to communicate properly and deliver the services that we have worked so hard to provide,” Waters said.

The congresswoman said she believes more than half of the people who came out Friday were misinformed. However, she also said the amount of people who came out shows that there is a real need in the community.

“There’s a lot of people out here,” said Dwight Carr, who showed up with the intention of getting a Section 8 coupon. “Because people are sleeping on the street, prices go up, nobody has a place to go.”

Waters said she will continue to try to help people what they need.

“This is indicative of neglect and a lack of processes that do what we want,” she said. “So people here are just trying to get a place to live and get some support.”
