Countdown star Susie Dent opens up about cancer scare after TV make-up artist spots worrying sign
COUNTDOWN’s Susie Dent has revealed she had a terrible cancer scare after a TV make-up artist urged her to have a spot under her eye checked.
The 58-year-old TV anchor told how the doctor then diagnosed skin cancer when she finally had him checked – a year after the mark first appeared.
She first opened up about her journey while speaking on Virgin Radio’s Breakfast Show with Chris Evans, who recently received the all-clear himself from cancer.
Linguist and lexicographer Susie said: “I had one under my eye a few years ago. And it just felt like a little cut.
“So it was kind of a linear progression and just wouldn’t heal. And I kept applying lots of different creams to it.
“Well, I had it too long. I had it for about a year.
“My GP said, ‘I’ll say the word ‘carcinoma,’ but don’t panic.”
And then they took it down, they basically cut it out. So I have some kind of scar under my eye.
“This virus doesn’t spread, so we were really lucky.
“I really just thought, ‘I cut my eye,’ and didn’t think about it from one week to the next.
“And it was my makeup artist who said, ‘I think you should get this looked at.'”
Carcinoma is cancer that forms in the epithelial tissue that lines most of your organs, the internal passages of your body, and your skin.
Most cancers affecting the skin, breast, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, prostate, head and neck are carcinomas.
Susie added: “Be careful because they don’t always look like moles or things you would expect, but can just look like little cuts.”
This comes after Chris, 57, revealed last week that he had received the good news that surgeons were able to remove the cancerous spot from his leg without leaving any remaining tissue.
