COVID in Los Angeles: CDC now recommends travelers get tested for COVID as close to the flight departure time as possible

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now urging all domestic travelers to “consider getting tested as close as possible to departure (no more than three days) before your trip.” .

The agency issued the announcement Tuesday after reporting a spike in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations.

This advice is especially true for travelers who are up to date with their vaccines and booster shots.

Previously, the recommendation to test before domestic travel applied to those who were not up to date with their COVID vaccines.

There are also test guides for after your trip, especially if you’ve spent time in crowded areas.

The CDC recommends testing for COVID after domestic travel “if your trip involved situations with a higher risk of exposure, such as: B. in crowded places without wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator”.
Finally, the agency reminds travelers to be aware of local regulations and conditions wherever they travel within the United States. Don’t assume that what applies in your city or state applies elsewhere.

“I agree,” said Rhea Shannon of North Hollywood. “I’ve been doing this since the pandemic started. I had to travel, even though we’re closed, and I didn’t want to infect anyone I was going to see, and I didn’t want, you know, not to know where I got it from. So I always do that.”

Bernice Mentzer, who traveled to Washington on Tuesday, told ABC7 that she is also on board with the move.

“I really like this idea,” she said. “I used to be a school teacher, so I work with the public, I work with students. I also have an elderly mother and in-laws, so I’m always healthy, I always wear my mask.”

These domestic updates are separate from the CDC guidelines for those traveling to the United States, including US territories, from abroad.

These travelers must have a negative coronavirus test within one day of travel or provide proof of having recovered from COVID in the last 90 days. Children under the age of 2 do not need to be tested.

The CDC also recommends getting tested three to five days after an international trip to the United States.

In addition, foreign nationals must be vaccinated against COVID to enter the United States. There is no such requirement for US citizens, US nationals, and lawful permanent residents traveling domestically or internationally.

Still, the agency recommends that people be up to date on vaccinations before air travel.
