Presentations at D23 Expo on Friday were all about animated films (and remakes of them), but all eyes were on Lucasfilm on Saturday morning. Fans flocked to Hall D23 to await updates on Star Wars and Indiana Jones 5, but Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy spoke first about Willow, a new sequel to George Lucas and Ron Howard’s fantasy epic from 1988.
Before releasing a new trailer, Warwick Davis, reprising his role as the titular character from the film, introduced another high-profile cast member. Davis invited Christian Slater on stage and revealed the actor would be joining the series, which is from creator Jonathan Kasdan.
Slater revealed that he was a longtime fan of Lucasfilm’s real estate list and would definitely get a chance to join the fantasy franchise.
“I love fantasy, science fiction,” Slater said. “Just being a part of this show was an absolute dream come true.”
Slater announced that his role is small, and he only dipped into the shoot for a few days to bring some comedy relief to the series.
“That’s a very funny character,” he said. “Surprisingly we had to do some improvisation and ad-lib and came up with some on the spot, which was a lot of fun.”
According to the official synopsis, Willow is an epic fantasy series with a modern sensibility set in an enchanted land of breathtaking beauty. Willow features a diverse international cast with Jonathan Kasdan, Ron Howard, Wendy Mericle, Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan serving as executive producers. The story began with an aspiring mage from a Nelwyn village and a little girl destined to unite the realms, who together helped destroy an evil queen and banish the forces of darkness. Now, in a magical world where brownies, wizards, trolls and other mystical creatures thrive, the adventure continues as an unlikely group of heroes embark on a perilous quest to places far beyond their homeland, where they will face their inner demons must come together to save their world.
Willow is scheduled to begin streaming on Disney+ on November 30, 2022. You can check out the new trailer below:
