Dad dragged for buying dollar store shampoo for daughter he doubts is his

The internet has misled a father who bought dollar store shampoo and conditioner for his daughter, who he doubts is his.

In a post published on Reddit’s r/AmITeA**hole forum, stylized “AITA,” a man under the anonymous username u/aitaconditioner asked the question “AITA for made my daughter use dollar store shampoo and conditioner,” which got 2,000 Upvotes and 1,000 comments from the AITA community.

The Redditor begins his story by explaining that he and his wife have three daughters. The oldest is 16, the middle one is 14 and the youngest is 10. However, he does talk about not being close to his middle daughter, who has “curly blonde hair and green eyes,” when the rest of his family and his wife’s family, all have “straight and brown hair with brown eyes”. He has his doubts that she isn’t his child and he doesn’t bond well with her because of it.

One way to properly wash curly hair is to brush through the hair to remove the tangles before it gets wet. Then apply shampoo and conditioner and dry thoroughly. Next, use appropriate styling products to dampen hair, including mouse and types of creams and oils, per John Frieda.

He wrote: “My middle daughter insists she needs a special shampoo and conditioner for her curly hair. She found something that wasn’t too expensive so I bought it for her but she goes through the flush like water. She came to me after a little over a month and said she needed another bottle.”

“I told her she doesn’t and that her conditioner should last at least another month, but probably longer, but she insists you need to use a lot of conditioner on curly hair. I bought her another bottle and told her to use less because she hasn’t had another one in at least two months,” he continued.

She returned to him after a month and told him she needed more. Instead of buying the shampoo and conditioner she usually uses, he went out and bought it at the dollar store. His daughter exclaimed that it would damage her hair as she is now happy with her hair.

“She blames us for the fact that her hair was unmanageable for most of her life because we didn’t learn how to care for curly hair, even though it’s no different from straight hair. She even threatened to shave her head and I know she didn’t win because she’s obsessed with her hair,” he said.

The Redditor said his daughter has an attitude towards both his wife and himself. His wife thinks they should give in and get her the shampoo and conditioner she wants. However, he feels she should “learn her lesson.”

Other Reddit users share their opinions in the comments.

U/lihzee received the top comment with over 12,000 upvotes,”[You’re the A**hole]. Wow. Yes, women with curly hair need a different type of shampoo and conditioner. Dollar Store Shampoo will likely damage your hair.”

“Don’t you understand how traits are passed on either? Aside from your daughter’s physical characteristics, was there a reason you thought she wasn’t your daughter that caused you to not bond properly with her? You’re shit, [You’re the A**hole],” they continued.

“[You’re the A**hole]’ began u/Ansela Jonla, ‘Curly hair is different from straight hair and even the simplest research will tell you so. And it’s harder and more expensive to take care of.”

U/StarryNebulas explained: “[You’re the A**hole]. First of all, you need to go back to school and learn about genetics. Sounds like you just don’t like your daughter because you convinced yourself she wasn’t yours.”

“Secondly, you must let your daughter properly care for her hair. Dollar Store shampoo and conditioner won’t cut them. You should teach your kids how to properly care for their hair, no matter what kind. They are to blame. Be a decent parent,” they concluded.
