“It’s been a while since Ariana and Dalton broke up, but he’s adjusted to his new normal and learned to accept it for what it is,” a source says exclusively Us weekly. “It’s certainly not what he expected because he obviously assumed they would be together forever.”
The insider notes that Gomez, 28, was new to the experience of being married to a pop star. The real estate agent was used to “keeping a personal life” before the two sparked a romance in 2020, and notes that putting your personal life front and center can be a challenge.
“He never thought he would get divorced in public,” the source said
explained. “But he’s persevering and he’s grateful for his friends and family who have really supported him.”
Us confirmed last month that Grande and Gomez decided to separate in January after two years of marriage. “Ariana and Dalton have been having some issues for months,” an insider said exclusively Us by the time. “They had issues before she left to film Wicked [in London] they couldn’t solve that, and distance didn’t help.”
A few days later, it was revealed that Grande had moved on with his co-star Ethan Slater After calling, he broke up with his estranged wife Lilly Jay. Slater, 31, filed for divorce from his former high school sweetheart a few weeks later. (The couple have a son together, whom they gave birth in August 2022.)
While Gomez was aware of Grande and Slater’s relationship, he initially remained optimistic that things could possibly work out for him and his estranged wife.
“What they had was the real deal, and he’s still coming to terms with the fact that they broke up,” a source said Us in July. “His friends have been trying to set him up with people, and even though he’s been dating him, he still claims that he and Ariana would get back together.”
While Gomez hoped for a reconciliation, Grande and Slater faced backlash over their romance. According to another insider, the co-stars’ inner circle advised them to take things slow and be “respectful” to their respective families.
“Ariana was told it was too early to go public with him and to take things slower,” the source explained Us earlier this month. “She’s very conscious of how her fans perceive her and she’s trying to be an adult. [But] If she had her way, they would see her with him tomorrow.”
