Cincinnati, Ohio– A Monday night game that began with a playoff atmosphere between two of the NFL’s best teams quickly turned scary for one of the competitors on the field at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.
An ambulance was needed to help Buffalo Bills keep Damar Hamlin safe after the 24-year-old made a routine tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, got up and then collapsed after hitting a pair in the first quarter of his team’s game had made steps against the Bengalis.
The coaches immediately worked on Hamlin when the game was halted in the opening stages with about six minutes remaining.
The moment took a turn when Hamlin was administered CPR, according to the ESPN game broadcast. Many of his teammates and the opposing side’s players gathered, hoping for the best for the fallen competitor.
He was then driven off the field.
It was not immediately revealed during the Monday Night Football broadcast exactly what happened or his condition, but officials and both head coaches agreed to temporarily suspend the game about 23 minutes after Hamlin’s downfall. Both teams returned to their dressing rooms.
The NFL officially suspended play for the night, but a resumption was not immediately reported. The league also described his condition as critical.
The NFL wrote in a statement:
“Tonight’s game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals has been postponed after the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced.
Hamlin received immediate medical attention at the scene from a team and independent medical staff, as well as local paramedics. He was then taken to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition.
Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
The NFL has been in constant contact with the NFL Players Association, which agrees with the game’s postponement.”
Hamlin was selected by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the University of Pittsburgh.
The Bills immediately sent their well wishes to their star.
“The thoughts and prayers of Bill’s mafia are with you Damar,” the Bills tweeted.
The nationally televised game received immediate feedback from Hamlin’s NFL fraternity.
