Dan Kildee announces cancer diagnosis

Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee of Michigan announced he has been diagnosed with a curable type of cancer and will undergo surgery.

The congressman who has served in the US House of Representatives for a little over a decade, said in a statement that a small tumor was discovered in one of his tonsils.

“A few weeks ago, after consulting my doctors, I scheduled what I believed to be a preventive scan for a swollen lymph node. The results, as it turned out, were more significant,” Kildee said in a opinion. “After additional testing, I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a serious but curable form of cancer. Luckily I discovered it very early. With early detection and great doctors, they found a very small tumor in one of my tonsils. “

“I’m going to have surgery in a few weeks to remove the cancer. The prognosis after surgery and treatment is excellent. My doctors advised me that it will take a few weeks for me to recover after the surgery. I’m excited to have this chapter behind me I’ll get back to work. But in the meantime I will be out of the office for a while. My congressional office will remain open to serve the people of Michigan’s eighth congressional district,” he said.

Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle reacted to the news by expressing their support for the congressman.

I am so sorry to learn that my wonderful friend @RepDanKildee, model public servant, has been diagnosed with cancer,” said Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland tweeted. “Dan, we know you will face this challenge with characteristic tenacity, determination and good humor. Send love and strength.”

Raskin announced last year that he was “diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a serious but curable form of cancer.”

Democratic Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania underwent surgery for prostate cancer earlier this year.

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center more than a month after he checked in to be treated for clinical depression.
