The good place Actor D’Arcy Carden says her character in Amazon’s new A league of its own series was a difficult role for her. Similar to the original Amazon movie A league of its own features an ensemble cast of unlikely personalities brought together by baseball.
This time, Greta Gill from Carden is the cool girl. To help her get into the role, Carden took inspiration from one of Hollywood’s coolest men.

As the first basewoman for the Rockford Peaches, Gill stands out among the other players as the image of the All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).
She is tall and slim, with perfectly coiffed red hair and an ever-present red lipstick that epitomizes the ideal blend of femininity and league baseball.
In the series, Gill and her best friend Jo arrive from New York and meet Carson Shaw (played by series co-creator Abbi Jacobson) when they arrive in Chicago for the AAGPBL Tryouts. Unlike Gill, Shaw is shy, unassuming, and guilt-ridden for leaving her life as a housewife to pursue her dream of playing baseball. But after meeting the flirtatious and spirited Gill, Shaw’s life begins to change forever.
How George Clooney helped D’Arcy Carden think she was cool
Coming from comedy, Carden tells Variety that she struggled when she landed the role of Gill on Amazon A league of its own. “I didn’t play muggy,” admits Carden. “It’s outside of my comfort zone. I’m so used to playing the crazy fool.”
Looking for inspiration, Carden thought, “Greta is cool. And she’s sexy, but she doesn’t try too hard. How would a guy play her?”
Carden found what she was looking for in one of Hollywood’s most distinguished leading men. “I started watching the performances of cool actors,” Carden continues to Variety. “My little secret is that I was like, ‘This character is George Clooney.'”

Carden is best known for her roles in hit series The good place and barry in the The good place, which ran from 2016 to 2020, starred Carden as a being with AI-level intelligence, Janet, alongside Ted Danson and Kristen Bell. But before all of that, Carden was a recurring guest star on Jacobson broad city. Although Carden and Jacobson had known each other for years prior to Carden’s appearances as Gemma, it was at this point that Carden got her first taste of Jacobson’s vision for a reimagined one A league of its own.
At the time, Carden told Variety that she assumed she would miss the opportunity to be part of the project. “I remember her bringing it up and being so happy for her but so jealous,” says Carden. “Well jealous! Not insanely jealous, just painful. It was like, ‘Oh my god, the dream!’”
But as fate would have it, Carden was destined to be a part of it A league of its own. Representing the joy and wonder of the characters from the series, Carden tells Variety, “My dreams really did come true in ways that sometimes I can’t even believe.”
