David Lowery’s short film The Green Knight: Watch the teaser from A24

David Lowery released one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2021 with The Green Knight, a magnificent adaptation of Sir Gawain’s story in the Arthurian legend. Now Lowery has returned to his version of Camelot with Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love , a short film produced exclusively for the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of the original film.

In the 20-minute film, Jackie Earle Haley and Sylvia Hoeks play the two main characters, beings of great knowledge who begin to share their insights. Although the story has no explicit ties to the original Green Knight, in which Dev Patel played Gawain, the film takes place in the same beautifully rendered version of Camelot seen in Lowery’s original film and is based on an Arthurian tale.

Lowery shot the short film this summer and said in an interview with Collider that it would never be legally released online -ray especially I thought it would be nice to have an additional film on the disc. I love physical media and loved the idea of ​​having this short film that would never be released online, that would only ever be available on the big screen or on this disc. I’m sure someone will rip it up right away, but theoretically this short film is a purely physical object.”

The Collector’s Edition of The Green Knight is available for pre-order from A24’s online store. In addition to Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love, the Blu-ray also includes a commentary track by Lowery, a behind-the-scenes documentary on the production, a short documentary on the score, featurettes exploring the film’s VFX, and costumes and deleted scenes. The Blu-ray also comes with a book containing an excerpt of the original poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” with annotations by Lowery and costume sketches by the film’s designer, Malgosia Turzanska. The Collector’s Edition Blu-ray will start shipping on November 30th.
